Wilderness Wardens - Bialowieza Uprising

In 2017, despite appeals and protests of the National Council for Nature Protection, scientific and nature protection communities, UNESCO Committee, Court of Justice of the EU and the society, logging trees in the Białowieża Forest (Poland) was drastically intensified. This forest is inhabited by many unique species under strict protection and exhibits natural processes preserved to the largest extent as compared to all other European forests.

Logging was justified by the alleged threat to the public safety and gradation of the European spruce bark beetle. A decision-making Ministry of the Environment and State Forests remained deaf to the voices of scientists proving the activities undertaken in the forests districts of Białowieża, Hajnówka and Browsk only lead to turning a unique forest into a timberland of scarce natural value, perfect only from the point of view of farming the forest as plantation.

In the view of lack of reaction of the authorities to the protests concerning the clearance of trees, a social movement emerged. About thousand people from all over Poland and at least several other countries got involved in the defense of the forest. About one hundred actions have been carried out since may in order to impede the logging, block the harvesters in a UNESCO zone and stop transporting the timber, which was done against the decision of the Court of Justice of the EU. The civil walks took place in parts of the forest closed by foresters, and many educational campaigns were launched.

80 Forest Guards from all over Poland were engaged into fighting defenders of the forest. Activists and their families were harassed also at their homes and threatened. Many people have been injured. Several people have been arrested. Criminal and civil procedures have been initiated. The Ombudsman and Amnesty International have highlighted abuses committed against peaceful protesters. The access of media to the areas where the protests took place was strictly regulated, and the journalists reporting the events have also been frequently punished with fines and removed from the site by Forest Guards.

State Forests cleared around 200 000 trees, out of which many were over one hundred years old and not planted by man; those trees remembered the times when nobody heard of forestry or State Forests themselves. The 2017 logging of Białowieza Forest was the largest since the fall of communism in 1989.

In January 2018 both Minister of Environment Jan Szyszko and General Director of State Forests Konrad Tomaszewski were dismissed, and some of hundreds trials against activists have ended – court acquitted activists, ruling that they acted on ground of necessity in order to protect Bialowieza Forest from destruction by the government agency. In April Court of Justice of the EU ruled, that logging was unlawful and must be stopped. The future is still unknown - scientists along with the activists point out, that the forest is still endangered until it's whole area will be covered under National Park status.

Strażnicy Puszczy - Powstanie Białowieskie

W 2017 roku pomimo apeli i protestów Państwowej Rady Ochrony Przyrody, środowisk naukowych, przyrodniczych, Komitetu UNESCO, Trybunału Sprawiedliwości UE oraz sprzeciwu społeczeństwa zintensyfikowano wycinkę Puszczy Białowieskiej. Lasu, w którym żyje wiele unikatowych i ściśle chronionych gatunków, a naturalne procesy pozostały najlepiej zachowane wśród wszystkich lasów Europy.

Do zwalczania obrońców puszczy ściągnięto 80 Strażników Leśnych z całej Polski. Trwają procesy karne i cywilne.

W kwietniu Trybunał Sprawiedliwości UE wydał wyrok iż zabiegi Lasów Państwowych w puszczy były niezgodne z prawem i zasadami ochrony przyrody. Naukowcy ostrzegają, że losy Puszczy Białowieskiej pozostają niepewne dopóki cały jej obszar nie zostanie objęty Parkiem Narodowym.
